I don’t particularly enjoy cleaning—unless I’m angry or stressed. But what I hate even more is when my home is dirty. So, I clean. A lot. I’ve found that creating a cleaning schedule helps prevent me from feeling overwhelmed, while also spreading out the tasks so I’m not left with a mountain of chores all at once. For example, I’ve designated specific days for laundry and deep cleaning, and I make it a habit to spend 10 minutes tidying up before bed and another 10 minutes in the morning.

Along with my regular cleaning routine, I also have a list of tasks to tackle every month. While I try to stay on top of these throughout the month, I don’t stress if I don’t get to them immediately. These monthly cleaning tasks ensure that the house stays fresh all month long, without taking up too much time or energy. Here are some of the things I think are worth cleaning once a month to help keep the rest of your home feeling clean and organized.

Ceiling Fans
It’s easy to forget about ceiling fans, but they can collect a surprising amount of dust. Every month, give the blades a good wipe down. Not only will this help keep your fans running smoothly, but it also prevents dust from flying around the room when you turn them on. A microfiber cloth or a special ceiling fan duster works wonders for this task. Plus, it’s a small chore that makes a big difference in the air quality of your home!

Inside the Fridge
It’s amazing how quickly food can go from fresh to forgotten in the fridge. Take a few minutes each month to toss anything that’s expired or no longer needed. Wipe down the shelves, especially after any spills. A clean fridge isn’t just about looks—it keeps food fresher longer and helps you stay organized. Bonus points if you make it a habit to give the fridge a quick clean as you go, so it’s always easy to maintain!

Microwave
We use the microwave daily, but we often forget to clean it regularly. Start by wiping down the inside, especially around the door and vents where food splatters can hide. If you notice stubborn spots, heat a bowl of water with lemon or vinegar to help loosen the grime. Not only does this freshen up the microwave, but it also leaves a lovely citrus scent. Cleaning the microwave monthly ensures it’s always ready for your next quick meal or snack.

Trash Can
The trash can takes a beating, but we don’t always give it the attention it deserves. Each month, take the time to empty it completely, clean the inside, and disinfect it. It’s amazing how a clean trash can can make your entire kitchen feel fresher! Don’t forget to clean the lid, too—especially if you have pets or little ones, as the trash can is one place germs and smells like to linger. You’ll be amazed at how much better your kitchen smells!

You can also add a dryer sheet to the bottom, or even dab a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a cotton ball and drop that in the bottom.

Washing Machine
Even though it’s cleaning your clothes, the washing machine itself needs some TLC. Over time, soap residue, dirt, and even mold can build up in the drum and door seals. Run a hot cycle with white vinegar or a washing machine cleaner to give it a deep clean. Don’t forget the detergent drawer and rubber seals—they can hold onto moisture and develop mildew. A clean washer means cleaner clothes and a fresher laundry room!

Dishwasher
Your dishwasher does a lot of heavy lifting, so it’s important to give it some regular attention. Clean the filter to prevent food buildup and give the interior a good scrub. You can run a cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or even just white vinegar to eliminate soap scum and odors. This helps your dishwasher run more efficiently and ensures that your dishes come out sparkling every time. Trust me, your future self will thank you when you open the door to a pristine dishwasher!

Under Furniture
It’s easy to forget what’s hiding under furniture, but dust, pet hair, and crumbs can quickly pile up if we don’t check every month. Give your couches, beds, and tables a little lift and vacuum or sweep underneath. Not only does this prevent dirt from building up, but it also keeps your home feeling fresh. Plus, you never know what you might find under there—a missing sock, a forgotten toy, or that one earring that’s been hiding for months!

Outdoor Windows
We all love natural light, but sometimes our windows don’t get the love they deserve. Every month, clean the outside of your windows to let more sunlight in and give the exterior of your home a polished look. If possible, clean both the inside and outside for the best shine. If your windows are particularly dirty or streaky, a mix of vinegar and water can do wonders. Regular cleaning keeps your windows looking crystal clear and helps you enjoy the view!

Entryway
Your entryway is the first thing you—and guests—see when entering your home, so keeping it clean is essential. Sweep the floor, wipe down surfaces, and organize shoes, coats, and bags. It’s a space that gets a lot of traffic, so keeping it neat can help set the tone for the rest of your home. A clean entryway makes a great first impression and helps you feel organized and ready to face the day!

Car Interior
Your car is another place that can quickly get messy without regular upkeep. Once a month, give the interior a deep clean by vacuuming the seats and carpets, wiping down the dashboard, and cleaning the cup holders. Don’t forget the door pockets and other hidden areas where dust and crumbs accumulate. A clean car not only looks better but feels better to drive in. Plus, it’s much more enjoyable when you have a tidy space to relax in on long road trips!

With these 10 tasks, you can keep your home in top shape without feeling overwhelmed. A little maintenance goes a long way in maintaining a clean, fresh, and welcoming space all month long. Enjoy the process of making your home feel more comfortable and clean, and don’t forget to give yourself credit for every task you complete!
